Attraction Introduction

Best Meyhanes in Istanbul: 21 Legendary Turkish Taverns for Rakı, Meze, Live Music & Local Nights

If you want to understand Istanbul after sunset beyond nightclubs, rooftop bars and tourist entertainment, there is another tradition you should experience at least once: the meyhane. A traditional Istanbul meyhane is not simply a restaurant where alcohol is served. It is a social institution built around shared meze, rakı, seafood, conversation, music and long dinners.

The best meyhanes in Istanbul range from tiny historic taverns in Beyoğlu to elegant seafood meyhanes overlooking the Bosphorus and centuries-old establishments in Balat, Kumkapı and the Historic Peninsula. Some are famous for their meze, some for rakı and conversation, some for live fasıl music, and others because generations of Istanbul residents have returned to the same tables for decades.

This guide focuses specifically on authentic and highly regarded Istanbul meyhanes, rather than ordinary bars or nightclubs. I have separated them according to what they actually do best, because a traveler looking for traditional Turkish tavern culture should not be sent to a fashionable bar simply because it happens to serve rakı.

Prices below are realistic 2026 planning estimates, not fixed menu prices. Alcohol, seafood and especially fish are highly variable in Istanbul, and the final bill can change considerably according to what you order. Where recent price evidence is available, it is incorporated into the estimate. Always check the current menu and ask about fish sold by weight before ordering.

What Is a Meyhane?

The word meyhane comes from Persian and essentially means “wine house.” In Istanbul, however, the word developed into something much more culturally specific: a traditional drinking and dining establishment where alcohol is accompanied by meze, hot appetizers, fish or other dishes and, traditionally, extended conversation.

The Turkish Ministry of Culture’s GoTürkiye describes meyhanes as traditional local drinking houses associated particularly with rakı and meze. The classic experience begins with a selection of small cold dishes, followed by ara sıcak, or hot appetizers, and often seafood or fish as the main course.

A good meyhane is therefore not a place where you order a cocktail, listen to a DJ for two hours and leave.

You sit down.

You choose meze.

You pour rakı or wine.

You talk.

You order another plate.

Perhaps music begins.

Another bottle appears.

The evening develops slowly.

That is the essence of the meyhane experience.

Meyhane vs Bar vs Pub vs Nightclub vs Disco

This distinction is important because international travelers often use these words interchangeably.

Meyhane

A meyhane is primarily a food-and-social experience accompanied by alcohol.

Typical characteristics include:

  • Rakı
  • Turkish wine
  • Meze
  • Seafood
  • Hot appetizers
  • Long shared meals
  • Conversation
  • Traditional Turkish music or fasıl at some establishments
  • Table service
  • A slower pace

You normally go to a meyhane with friends, family, a partner or colleagues.

Bar

A bar is primarily focused on drinks.

You may sit at the counter, order cocktails, beer or spirits and spend much less time eating.

A modern cocktail bar can have little in common with a traditional meyhane.

Pub

A pub is generally more casual and drink-oriented.

Beer, simple food, sports, music and socializing are common.

The atmosphere is often younger and more informal than a classic meyhane.

Nightclub

A nightclub is primarily about music, dancing and entertainment.

The drink is secondary to the performance or dance floor.

A nightclub may have a DJ, entrance fee, dress code, minimum spending or VIP tables.

Disco

A disco is essentially a dance-focused entertainment venue, although the word is less commonly used in Istanbul today than “club” or “nightclub.”

The simplest way to remember the difference

Meyhane = food + meze + rakı + conversation + culture

Bar = drinks + socializing

Pub = casual drinks + food + social atmosphere

Nightclub = DJ + dancing + entertainment

This is why I would not compare a meyhane directly with the luxury nightclubs discussed in a separate Istanbul nightlife guide. They are completely different experiences.

The History of Meyhane Culture in Istanbul

Byzantine Roots and the Multicultural City

The history of Istanbul’s taverns goes much further back than modern Turkish nightlife.

Academic research into Istanbul’s meyhane culture shows that the city’s tradition of drinking establishments continued from the Byzantine period into Ottoman Istanbul. After the Ottoman conquest, taverns continued to operate, particularly in neighborhoods with substantial non-Muslim populations.

Galata, Pera, Kumkapı and other commercial districts became particularly important to this culture.

Greek, Armenian and Jewish communities played an important role in the development of Istanbul’s tavern and meze traditions.

A recent academic study of Byzantine influences on Istanbul’s cuisine notes the long-standing presence of taverns and meze traditions in areas including Pera, Galata and Kumkapı.

Ottoman Istanbul

During the Ottoman period, meyhanes became important social spaces.

They were not simply places for drinking.

They were places where people met, talked, ate and listened to music.

Historical sources describe licensed “gedikli” meyhanes, as well as less formal establishments known as “koltuk” meyhanes. Old meyhanes could have a long counter with rakı and wine vessels and small plates of simple foods such as cheese, olives, pickles and beans. Interestingly, historical descriptions indicate that the modern dining table did not become standard in Istanbul meyhanes until the late nineteenth century.

Wine Was Originally More Important

Modern visitors often assume that rakı has always been the unquestioned drink of the meyhane.

The historical picture is more complicated.

Research into Ottoman Istanbul shows that wine was particularly prominent in earlier centuries, while rakı became increasingly important during the nineteenth century, especially as the city underwent modernization and European drinking habits influenced urban life. Beer, cognac and champagne also entered the city’s drinking culture during this period.

Today, however, rakı has become the drink most strongly associated with the classic Turkish meyhane.

The Rise of Modern Meyhane Culture

By the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, the meyhane had evolved.

Music became increasingly important in some establishments.

Fasıl became associated with evenings of food, rakı and music.

Meyhanes became places where artists, writers, musicians and intellectuals gathered.

The tradition survived the dramatic social changes of the twentieth century and remains one of the most distinctive forms of traditional Istanbul nightlife.

What Does a Traditional Meyhane Table Look Like?

A classic meyhane table is built gradually.

Cold Meze

These are usually the first dishes to arrive.

Examples include:

  • Haydari
  • Fava
  • Şakşuka
  • Eggplant salad
  • Atom
  • Muhammara
  • Cacık
  • Ezme
  • Deniz börülcesi
  • Pilaki
  • Lakerda
  • Stuffed vegetables
  • Various seasonal vegetables

The GoTürkiye guide emphasizes the importance of choosing several small meze dishes rather than treating them as simple side dishes.

Ara Sıcak

The next stage is ara sıcak, literally “between-hot” or intermediate hot dishes.

Common examples include:

  • Fried liver
  • Calamari
  • Shrimp casserole
  • Pastrami pastries
  • Fried mussels
  • Hot börek
  • Octopus
  • Fried fish

Main Course

Depending on the meyhane, the main course might be:

  • Grilled sea bass
  • Bluefish
  • Seasonal fish
  • Octopus
  • Seafood casserole
  • Meat
  • Lamb
  • Liver

In classic seafood-oriented meyhanes, fish remains the natural finale.

Rakı

Rakı is the drink most strongly associated with modern Turkish meyhane culture.

It is traditionally diluted with water and often accompanied by ice.

The resulting cloudy white appearance is so characteristic that visitors sometimes refer to it as the “lion’s milk” culture of Turkey.

But you do not have to drink rakı to enjoy a meyhane.

Wine and beer are commonly available, and many establishments accommodate guests who prefer not to drink alcohol.

How Much Does a Meyhane in Istanbul Cost in 2026?

There is no universal meyhane price.

Your final bill depends heavily on:

  • Number of meze
  • Portion sizes
  • Rakı quantity
  • Wine
  • Fish
  • Seafood
  • Imported drinks
  • Location
  • Live entertainment
  • Fixed menu arrangements

For planning purposes, I would budget approximately:

₺1,200–₺1,800 per person: modest meyhane meal with limited alcohol

₺1,800–₺2,800 per person: comfortable traditional meyhane evening with several meze and drinks

₺2,800–₺4,000+ per person: premium meyhane with substantial seafood, fish and alcohol

₺4,000+ per person: possible at premium seafood venues, especially when ordering expensive fish or significant amounts of rakı

Recent 2026 visitor reports show bills around ₺1,800–₺2,000 per person at several established venues, while premium seafood establishments such as Giritli and Eleos can exceed ₺2,000 per person.

The most important rule is simple:

Never assume that a fish has a standard menu price. Ask for the current price before ordering.

The 12 Best Meyhanes in Istanbul

The following list is deliberately different from a list of “nightlife bars.” These are places I would consider when the objective is specifically to experience Istanbul meyhane culture.

1. Asmalı Cavit — The Meyhane I Would Recommend First

Why Asmalı Cavit Is Special

If someone asked me for one answer to the question “Where should I experience a real Istanbul meyhane?”, Asmalı Cavit would be extremely high on my list.

It is located in Asmalımescit in Beyoğlu, but despite being in one of Istanbul’s most tourist-accessible nightlife districts, it has retained the intimate feeling of a neighborhood institution.

Time Out describes it as one of Istanbul’s most cherished meyhanes, known for its loyal regulars, strong service and dishes such as fava, topik, eggplant salad and liver. It has also been recognized by Time Out as an important part of Istanbul’s culinary heritage.

What Should You Order?

Start with:

  • Fava
  • Topik
  • Eggplant salad
  • Octopus salad
  • Shrimp casserole
  • Yaprak ciğer

The combination of seafood and meat dishes is one of Asmalı Cavit’s strengths.

Atmosphere

Warm, intimate and traditional.

This is not the place to go if you want loud dancing.

It is excellent for conversation.

Price

For 2026, I would budget roughly ₺1,800–₺2,800 per person for a proper dinner with several meze and alcohol.

Recent visitor reports include approximately ₺1,800–₺2,000 per person, although individual spending can vary significantly.

Hours and Reservation

Current listings show it operating Monday through Saturday, with Sunday closed; published hours vary somewhat between sources, so confirm when booking.

I strongly recommend reserving a table, particularly Friday and Saturday.

Best Time to Go

8:00–9:00 PM

That gives you enough time to enjoy the meal without rushing.

My Verdict

Best for: first-time visitors wanting a classic Istanbul meyhane

Atmosphere: 9.5/10

Food: 9/10

Authenticity: 10/10

Value: 8.5/10

2. Yakup 2 — One of Istanbul’s Great Traditional Meyhanes

Why Yakup 2 Deserves a Place Here

Yakup is one of the names that repeatedly appears when Istanbul residents discuss classic meyhane culture.

The Asmalımescit location is particularly convenient for travelers because it is close to Tünel and Şişhane.

Time Out describes Yakup as having an intellectual and sophisticated regular clientele, with traditional meze, liver, seafood, hot appetizers and grilled dishes. It also notes that the restaurant is frequently full and reservations are especially important on weekends.

What Makes It Different?

Yakup feels more literary and traditional than trendy.

This is a place for sitting down and allowing dinner to become the evening.

What to Order

Try:

  • Haydari with eggplant
  • Pilaki
  • Spicy ezme
  • Artichoke
  • Shrimp
  • Octopus
  • Liver
  • Calamari

Price

Current 2026 listings give a lower baseline, but real spending with meze and alcohol is likely to be considerably higher than a simple meal price. I would budget ₺1,500–₺2,500 per person for a normal evening and more if ordering substantial seafood and rakı.

Hours

The official Yakup 2 website currently lists Monday through Saturday, 14:00–01:00, with Sunday closed.

Reservation

Weekdays may be manageable without one, but reserve for Friday and Saturday. Current reservation guidance specifically recommends booking ahead for weekends or preferred tables.

Best Time

8:00 PM onward

My Verdict

Best for: traditional atmosphere and serious meyhane dining

Atmosphere: 9/10

Food: 9/10

Authenticity: 9.5/10

3. Refik — For Rakı, Meze and Conversation

Why Refik Is Important

Refik has a long history in Asmalımescit and is another classic name rather than a fashionable newcomer.

Time Out describes it as having more than five decades of history and highlights its meze, liver, lamb dishes, pastrami and eggplant salad.

This is exactly the kind of place I would recommend to someone who wants to understand why the meyhane is fundamentally about conversation and food, not dancing.

What to Eat

Try:

  • Arnavut ciğeri
  • Kuzu sarması
  • Kağıtta pastırma
  • Patlıcan salatası
  • Seasonal olive-oil dishes

Price

Plan for approximately ₺1,500–₺2,500 per person, depending on drinks.

Opening Hours

Current listings indicate daily service, with published closing times generally around 02:00, although some listings show different evening schedules.

Reservation

Recommended for dinner, particularly Friday and Saturday.

Best Time

7:30–8:30 PM

My Verdict

Best for: traditional rakı table and conversation

Atmosphere: 9/10

Food: 9/10

Tourist factor: relatively low for such a central location

4. Giritli — The Choice for a Refined Seafood and Meze Evening

Why Giritli Is Different

Giritli is not the old-fashioned neighborhood meyhane experience in the same way as Asmalı Cavit or Yakup.

It is more refined.

It is located in Cankurtaran near Sultanahmet and specializes in Aegean and Cretan-inspired food.

The Michelin Guide currently lists Giritli as a recommended restaurant and highlights its courtyard, meze set menu and combination of wine and rakı.

What Makes It Special?

The setting.

The food.

The meze.

And the fact that it is particularly convenient for travelers staying around Sultanahmet.

What Is Included?

Giritli is known for a set-menu style experience with a large selection of meze and drinks.

Current 2026 sources describe its fixed-price menu as including wine and rakı, although you should confirm the exact current package when booking.

Price

This is not a budget meyhane.

Recent visitor reports place spending at ₺2,000+ per person, so I would budget approximately ₺2,000–₺3,500 per person depending on the current menu and drinks.

Opening Hours

The Michelin Guide currently lists it as open daily from 13:00 to midnight.

Reservation

Strongly recommended.

Giritli manages its own reservations.

Best Time

7:00–8:00 PM

My Verdict

Best for: elegant meze, seafood and a romantic evening

Atmosphere: 9.5/10

Food: 9.5/10

Authenticity: 8.5/10

Value: 8/10

5. Eleos Beyoğlu — Greek-Istanbul Meyhane Tradition With a View

Why Eleos Is Special

Eleos is one of the most interesting choices for travelers who want the multicultural side of Istanbul’s food history.

Its Beyoğlu restaurant is located on İstiklal Avenue in the historic Hıdivyal Palas.

The restaurant describes itself as a “white meyhane” in Pera and combines traditional Rum meyhane influences with Aegean cuisine. Its menu emphasizes seafood, seasonal Aegean herbs, Greek classics and Armenian meze.

The View

One of Eleos’s biggest advantages is its panorama.

Depending on your table, you can look toward:

  • Bosphorus
  • Maiden’s Tower
  • Üsküdar
  • Asian Istanbul

That makes it a stronger choice for visitors who want the food and atmosphere of a meyhane but also want something visually memorable.

What to Order

Look for:

  • Levrek kokoreç
  • Octopus
  • Shrimp
  • Seasonal Aegean herbs
  • Greek-style meze
  • Armenian-inspired dishes

Recent visitors have particularly praised the seafood and service, with some reporting spending around ₺1,400–₺2,000+ per person.

Price

Budget approximately ₺2,000–₺3,500 per person.

Hours

Current listings show approximately 14:30–23:30/00:00 daily.

Live Music?

Do not choose Eleos expecting a traditional fasıl show.

Current listings do not indicate regular live music, and one current local listing specifically states that there is no live music.

This is actually an advantage if you want conversation.

Reservation

Recommended, particularly for a preferred view.

My Verdict

Best for: elegant meze, seafood, views and conversation

6. Agora Meyhanesi 1890 — A Genuine Piece of Balat’s History

Why Agora Is One of the Most Interesting

Agora Meyhanesi 1890 is not simply using “historic” in its name.

According to its official website, the establishment was founded in 1890 by Greek captain Asteri Dulidis in Balat’s Çıfıtçı Çarşısı and has preserved the historic character of the establishment. The restaurant describes itself as operating within historic walls and continuing the cultural heritage of the original meyhane.

This makes Agora one of the most compelling choices for travelers interested in the historical side of Istanbul meyhane culture.

Location

Balat.

That means it is quite different from the Asmalımescit cluster.

The surrounding neighborhood itself is worth exploring before dinner.

What to Eat

Current menu information includes:

  • Fava
  • Hummus
  • Atom
  • Eggplant
  • Dry cacık
  • Cretan spread
  • Lakerda
  • Fish pastırma
  • Shrimp
  • Calamari
  • Grilled octopus
  • Fish kokoreç
  • Seasonal fish

Recent menu information was verified in June 2026.

Price

A reasonable 2026 planning budget is ₺2,000–₺3,500 per person, depending heavily on fish and alcohol.

A May 2026 group meal reported a fixed menu with six meze, one hot appetizer, salad, main course, dessert/fruit and limited rakı/wine/beer at ₺2,750 per person.

Opening Hours

The restaurant’s current site states that it serves seven days a week, while current listings show approximately 12:00–01:00.

Best Time

7:00–8:00 PM

Arrive early enough to explore Balat before dinner.

Reservation

Recommended, particularly Friday and Saturday.

My Verdict

Best for: history, atmosphere and traditional Balat meyhane character

Historical value: 10/10

Food: 9/10

7. Krependeki İmroz — One of Nevizade’s Historic Names

Why Imroz Matters

If you walk through Nevizade and see tables spreading into the street, you are in one of the most famous meyhane areas of modern Beyoğlu.

Krependeki İmroz is one of the names associated with this culture.

The story of İmroz is particularly interesting because its proprietor Yorgo Okumuş came to Istanbul from Gökçeada and eventually became associated with the development of Nevizade’s meyhane culture. The Guide Istanbul notes that when İmroz moved to Nevizade in the early 1980s, the street looked completely different from the dense meyhane area it became later.

Atmosphere

This is much more social and street-oriented than Eleos.

You are in the middle of Nevizade.

People talk.

Tables are close together.

The atmosphere can become lively.

Hours

Current listings show 12:00–01:00 daily.

Reservation

Recommended for Friday and Saturday evenings.

Price

Budget approximately ₺1,500–₺2,500 per person, depending on alcohol and seafood.

Best Time

8:00 PM onward

My Verdict

Best for: classic Nevizade atmosphere

Atmosphere: 9/10

Local character: 9/10

8. Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi — For Fasıl and Old Istanbul Atmosphere

Why Go Here?

Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi is one of the most recognizable historic meyhanes in Beyoğlu.

It is particularly relevant if your idea of a Turkish night includes:

  • Rakı
  • Meze
  • Turkish art music
  • Fasıl
  • A crowded traditional dining room
  • Long dinners

Time Out’s historic guide identifies Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi as one of Istanbul’s famous fasıl establishments and notes live fasıl programming, with different floors offering different musical atmospheres.

Current Information

Current listings show daily opening, generally until around 01:00–02:00 depending on the source.

It also accepts reservations and offers live music.

What Night Should You Choose?

If your objective is specifically music and fasıl, Friday or Saturday is the safest choice.

But confirm the current program when reserving because live music schedules can change.

Price

Budget approximately ₺1,500–₺2,500 per person.

Dress

Smart casual is appropriate.

You do not need a suit.

Avoid beachwear, shorts intended for the beach and overly casual clothing if you are going for dinner and live music.

My Verdict

Best for: traditional Turkish music and classic meyhane atmosphere

9. İsmet Baba — Bosphorus-Side Meyhane in Kuzguncuk

Why İsmet Baba Is Different

This is one of the strongest choices if you want a Bosphorus-side meyhane rather than a Beyoğlu tavern.

İsmet Baba was founded in 1951 and is located directly in Kuzguncuk on the Asian side. Its official website identifies the establishment’s founding year and location.

The menu is strongly seafood-oriented and includes:

  • Sea bass
  • Bluefish
  • Turbot
  • Bonito
  • Mackerel
  • Octopus salad
  • Lakerda
  • Marinated sea bass
  • Shrimp
  • Calamari
  • Fava
  • Haydari
  • Eggplant
  • Seasonal meze

The official menu confirms the breadth of its fish, seafood and meze selection.

Why I Recommend It

The setting.

Kuzguncuk feels dramatically different from Taksim.

The evening is slower.

The Bosphorus is part of the experience.

Price

Recent visitor reports range from approximately ₺800–₺1,000 to ₺1,800–₺2,000+ per person, illustrating how strongly the bill depends on what you order.

For a comfortable seafood-and-rakı evening, I would personally budget ₺1,500–₺2,800 per person.

Hours

The official site lists approximately 12:00–00:00.

Live Music?

Do not choose İsmet Baba specifically for a live music show.

Choose it for:

Bosphorus + seafood + meze + rakı + conversation.

Best Time

6:30–7:30 PM

This gives you the possibility of arriving before sunset and experiencing the waterfront as the light changes.

My Verdict

Best for: Bosphorus atmosphere and seafood

Food: 9/10

10. Kör Agop — A Historic Kumkapı Institution

The Story Behind Kör Agop

Kör Agop is one of the most historically interesting names in Istanbul’s meyhane culture.

The establishment dates its beginnings to 1938, and historical accounts connect its origins with Agop, a fisherman who became associated with the Kumkapı meyhane scene. Current information continues to describe it as a historic meyhane founded in 1938.

The story is particularly evocative because it began modestly, with simple tables and a makeshift cooling pool for fish before developing into a much larger establishment.

What Is It Known For?

  • Armenian-influenced meze
  • Seafood
  • Rakı
  • Traditional atmosphere
  • Live music
  • Kumkapı history

Time Out has long identified Kör Agop as an important representative of Kumkapı’s traditional meyhane culture and specifically recommends its topik.

Price

Current 2026 visitor reports indicate approximately ₺1,400–₺2,000 per person for some meals, while other listings place the average around ₺1,000.

For planning purposes, budget ₺1,500–₺2,500 per person.

Hours

Current listings show approximately 11:00–02:00 daily.

Live Music

Live music is listed among the venue’s features.

If music is important to you, confirm the program for your specific night before going.

Best Time

8:00 PM

My Verdict

Best for: historic Kumkapı meyhane culture

History: 10/10

Music: 8.5/10

11. Sofyalı 9 — Small, Intimate and Elegant

Why Choose Sofyalı 9?

Sofyalı 9 is a very different experience from a large fasıl venue.

It is located on Sofyalı Sokak in Asmalımescit, in a building dating to the late nineteenth century.

The restaurant describes itself as a simple, intimate and elegant meyhane, with nostalgic photographs and objects creating a warm atmosphere.

What Makes It Attractive?

It is ideal when you want:

  • Conversation
  • Wine or rakı
  • Traditional food
  • A quieter atmosphere
  • A historic interior
  • A romantic dinner

Hours

Current listings indicate approximately 14:30–00:00, with Monday closed. Another listing reports later closing, so check directly before visiting.

Price

Budget approximately ₺1,500–₺2,500 per person.

Best Time

7:30 PM

My Verdict

Best for: couples and quieter dinners

12. Tarihi Safa Meyhanesi — For a Taste of Old Istanbul

Why Safa Is Worth the Journey

Safa is not as convenient for the average tourist staying around Taksim, but that is precisely why it deserves attention.

It was established in 1948, and Time Out describes it as one of the places where generations of Istanbul’s meyhane culture have continued in a historic setting. The establishment is known for meze, meat, fish and an atmosphere that evokes older Istanbul.

What to Order

Time Out highlights:

  • Atom
  • Lakerda
  • Pilaki
  • White cheese
  • Shrimp
  • Calamari
  • Arnavut ciğeri

Hours

Current listings show Monday through Saturday approximately 12:00–00:00, with Sunday closed.

Reservation

Recommended for dinner.

Price

Budget approximately ₺1,200–₺2,000 per person, depending on drinks and seafood.

Best Time

7:00–8:00 PM

My Verdict

Best for: travelers willing to leave the main tourist circuit for an older-style Istanbul experience

13. Nomads Istanbul Rooftop Meyhane — The Ultimate Bosphorus Dinner Show Experience

Why Nomads Deserves a Place on This List

Unlike a traditional meyhane where the focus is mainly on rakı, meze and conversation, Nomads Istanbul delivers a complete Turkish nightlife experience that combines fine dining, panoramic Bosphorus views and professionally choreographed live performances.

Located on the rooftop of the Sofitel Hotel in Taksim, Nomads is one of the few venues in Istanbul where visitors can enjoy an elegant dinner while watching belly dancers, zenne performers, live percussion shows and contemporary Turkish entertainment against one of the city’s most spectacular skylines.

What Makes Nomads Different?

Most traditional meyhanes offer live fasıl music, but Nomads takes the concept several steps further by creating a theatrical dinner experience.

During the evening guests can enjoy:

  • Live Oriental Belly Dance Shows
  • Professional Zenne Performances
  • Live Darbuka Shows
  • Turkish Folk Dance Performances
  • DJ Sessions after Dinner
  • Bosphorus Rooftop Views
  • Premium Cocktails
  • Traditional Rakı Service
  • Turkish & Mediterranean Cuisine

Instead of simply having dinner, guests spend the entire evening enjoying a carefully produced entertainment program.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is elegant rather than noisy.

The rooftop terrace overlooks the Bosphorus, Dolmabahçe Palace and the historic skyline, making it one of the most photogenic nightlife venues in Istanbul.

If you are celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or special occasion, Nomads offers a far more memorable setting than a conventional meyhane.

Music & Entertainment

Entertainment begins during dinner rather than after it.

The evening typically includes:

  • Turkish live music
  • Belly dancers
  • Zenne dancers
  • Live darbuka performances
  • Interactive audience participation
  • DJ performances later in the evening

Unlike many meyhanes where entertainment depends on the day of the week, Nomads advertises live performances every night.

Cuisine

The menu combines:

  • Premium Turkish Meze
  • Mediterranean Specialties
  • Antakya Cuisine
  • Grilled Kebabs
  • Seafood
  • Signature Cocktails
  • Turkish Wines
  • Rakı

Average Cost

Expect approximately:

  • ₺2,500–₺4,500 per person
  • Higher for premium drinks or VIP seating

Although more expensive than a neighborhood meyhane, the price includes one of Istanbul’s best dinner-show experiences.

Reservation

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on Friday and Saturday nights and during the summer season.

Dress Code

Smart Casual

Beachwear, sportswear and flip-flops are discouraged.

Opening Hours

Dinner service begins in the evening and the venue generally operates until around 1:00 AM.

Who Should Visit?

Nomads is ideal for:

  • Couples
  • Honeymooners
  • First-time visitors to Istanbul
  • Luxury travelers
  • Groups celebrating birthdays
  • Travelers looking for a complete Turkish night experience

It is less suitable for travelers seeking an authentic neighborhood meyhane filled with local regulars.

14. Vişneli Meyhane — Modern Meyhane With Bosphorus Views

Why Vişneli Meyhane Belongs on This List

Vişneli Meyhane is one of the newer names that should be considered when discussing the best modern meyhanes in Istanbul.

Located in Cihangir on the terrace of Loop Hotel Bosphorus, it combines the traditional meyhane formula with a more contemporary setting, modern Turkish cuisine and views toward the Bosphorus and historic peninsula. Current listings continue to show it operating at Hardal Sokak No. 15 and serving until approximately 2:00 AM.

The venue opened in 2024 and was specifically designed as a more refined alternative to the louder, more crowded new-generation meyhane concept. A 2025 review described it as a stylish venue with a strong view, a carefully designed menu and music that allows guests to continue their conversations rather than overwhelming the table.

What Makes Vişneli Different?

The biggest attraction is the combination of:

  • Cihangir location
  • Bosphorus views
  • Terrace seating
  • Modern Turkish cuisine
  • Contemporary meze
  • Cocktails
  • Rakı
  • Wine
  • A more sophisticated atmosphere
  • Late-night opening

It is particularly attractive for couples and groups who want a stylish meyhane without the intensity of a large fasıl hall.

What Should You Order?

The menu has included contemporary interpretations of classic meze such as:

  • Eggplant-based meze
  • Fava
  • Humus
  • Shrimp
  • Octopus
  • Seasonal vegetables
  • Modern interpretations of Turkish appetizers

Recent visitor feedback particularly highlights the grilled octopus and meze selection, while some guests have criticized portion sizes and certain main dishes.

Is There Live Music?

This is an important distinction.

Vişneli is not primarily a fasıl-and-dance meyhane.

Its attraction is more about:

Food + rakı + atmosphere + view + conversation

rather than a large traditional stage show.

That makes it an excellent choice for someone who wants a sophisticated night out but does not necessarily want dancing.

Opening Hours

Current listings indicate approximately 2:00 PM–2:00 AM, although some third-party listings show variations by day. Check directly when booking.

Reservation

Strongly recommended, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The terrace is one of the principal reasons to visit, so request an outdoor or view-oriented table when making the reservation.

Price Level

Vişneli should be considered upper-middle to premium priced.

A realistic 2026 planning budget is approximately ₺2,000–₺3,500+ per person, depending on alcohol and seafood.

My Verdict

Best for: Couples, views, modern meze and sophisticated atmosphere

Music: Background/atmospheric rather than traditional fasıl entertainment

Food: 8.5–9/10

Atmosphere: 9/10

15. Sade Meyhane — Meyhane With Music and Entertainment

Why Sade Is Different

Sade Meyhane belongs to a different category from historic establishments such as Safa.

This is a more entertainment-oriented modern Istanbul meyhane, combining food and drinks with music and stage-style entertainment.

Current venue information describes Sade as combining meyhane culture with DJ performances and oriental shows.

That makes it much more relevant to visitors searching for a fun Istanbul nightlife experience with meze and rakı rather than a quiet dinner.

What You Can Expect

The evening can combine:

  • Turkish meze
  • Rakı
  • Other alcoholic drinks
  • Music
  • DJ entertainment
  • Oriental performances
  • Group dining
  • A lively atmosphere

Location

Sade is located in Beyoğlu, around Hamalbaşı Street, making it convenient for travelers staying around Taksim, İstiklal Avenue and central Beyoğlu.

Best For

Groups of friends

Celebrations

Visitors who want entertainment

Travelers who want dinner and nightlife in the same venue

Important Consideration

Do not choose Sade if your priority is a quiet conversation over a traditional rakı table.

Choose it when entertainment is part of the reason you are going out.

Opening Hours

Current listings indicate late-night service, generally extending to approximately 2:00 AM.

Reservation

Strongly recommended on Friday and Saturday.

16. Ziyade Fasıl — Live Fasıl, Shows and DJ Entertainment

Why Ziyade Fasıl Is One of the Most Important Additions

If the definition of a modern meyhane includes live Turkish music, fasıl, dancing and stage entertainment, Ziyade Fasıl is much more relevant than many conventional meyhane restaurants.

Ziyade is currently located at the Hilton in Kozyatağı, Kadıköy, and its own website explicitly advertises live fasıl, shows and DJ entertainment seven days a week. The current published operating hours are 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM.

What Makes It Different?

The experience combines:

Meyhane food

Meze

Live fasıl

Zeybek

Oriental performances

Zenne

DJ entertainment

This is much closer to what many international visitors imagine when they search for a Turkish dinner with live music and dancing.

Location

Kozyatağı, Kadıköy.

This is important because travelers staying in central European Istanbul sometimes overlook the Asian side when planning nightlife.

Opening Hours

Every evening: approximately 19:00–01:00

The venue currently advertises entertainment seven days a week.

Price Level

Ziyade operates more like an organized dinner-and-entertainment experience than a casual neighborhood meyhane.

Expect approximately ₺2,000–₺3,500+ per person, depending on the package, drinks and seating arrangement.

Best For

Live Turkish music

Fasıl

Dancing

Group celebrations

Visitors looking for a complete dinner-and-show experience

My Verdict

Entertainment: 9.5/10

Traditional meyhane feeling: 7.5/10

Live music: 9.5/10

Best for: A complete Turkish nightlife evening

17. İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi — Kadıköy’s Boutique Rum Meyhane

Why This One Is Interesting

İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi is one of the more distinctive options in Kadıköy because it specifically presents itself as a boutique Rum meyhane.

It is located on Neşet Ömer Street in Caferağa, close to Kadıköy’s restaurant and nightlife streets.

Current information describes it as a boutique Rum meyhane with live music, dancing and Greek/Turkish influences. It also offers sirtaki and zeibekiko instruction.

What Makes It Special?

This is where the multicultural history of Istanbul’s meyhane tradition becomes particularly visible.

The experience can include:

  • Rakı
  • Meze
  • Turkish and Greek dishes
  • Live music
  • Sirtaki
  • Zeibekiko
  • Dancing
  • Small-scale atmosphere

Important Rule for Solo Visitors

Current venue information specifically states that on live-music nights, male customers without female companions are not accepted.

That is an important rule international visitors should know before going.

Opening Hours

Current listings indicate approximately 15:00–01:30, with slightly different Sunday hours.

Best For

Couples

Mixed groups

Greek-Turkish meyhane atmosphere

Live music

Dancing

My Verdict

Music: 9/10

Dance: 9/10

Traditional character: 8.5/10

Best for: Couples and mixed groups looking for a lively Kadıköy evening

18. BİBUSE Musiki Meyhanesi — Music-Focused Meyhane in Kadıköy

Why BİBUSE Is Worth Considering

BİBUSE Musiki Meyhanesi is another Kadıköy option that deserves attention when the objective is combining meyhane dining with Turkish music.

The name itself is significant: “Musiki” refers to music, and the venue is positioned around a traditional musical atmosphere rather than simply functioning as a conventional restaurant.

Location

Osmanağa, Kadıköy.

This makes it particularly convenient if you are already spending the evening around:

  • Kadıköy Çarşı
  • Bahariye Street
  • Moda
  • Kadıköy waterfront

Best For

Turkish music

Rakı and meze

Kadıköy nightlife

Groups of friends

Opening Hours

Current listings indicate service extending into the late evening and approximately 01:00.

Price Level

Expect a mid-range to upper-mid-range meyhane bill depending on drinks and food.

My Verdict

Best for: Travelers who want to combine Kadıköy nightlife with a more traditional music-oriented meyhane.

19. Gri Meyhane — Live Music in Kadıköy

Why Gri Meyhane Is Worth Adding

Gri Meyhane is located in Caferağa, one of the most active nightlife areas of Kadıköy.

Its biggest advantage is location.

Instead of traveling back to Taksim after dinner, visitors can continue their evening around Kadıköy’s bars, pubs, cafés and music venues.

What Makes It Different?

Gri Meyhane currently operates as a live-music venue, making it more relevant to the nightlife side of meyhane culture than a quiet traditional tavern.

It is particularly suitable for younger travelers and groups who want:

  • Meze
  • Drinks
  • Music
  • Social atmosphere
  • Kadıköy nightlife

Price Level

Current listings place it approximately in the ₺1,000–₺2,000 range, although alcohol consumption can increase the final bill substantially.

Best For

Young travelers

Kadıköy nightlife

Live music

Groups

My Verdict

Value: 8.5/10

Music: 8/10

Local nightlife atmosphere: 9/10

20. Kumkapı Sütliman Fasıl Meyhane — Dinner, Fasıl, Dancing and Oriental Shows

Why Sütliman Is One of the Strongest Entertainment Choices

This is exactly the type of venue that was missing from the original list.

Sütliman is not simply a restaurant serving rakı.

Its official website describes a large 450-seat fasıl meyhane combining Turkish and Rum meze, fish, meat, live music, fasıl, dancing and oriental entertainment.

What Happens During the Evening?

The current program includes:

  • Fasıl orchestra every day
  • Live singers
  • Turkish music
  • Popular songs
  • Roman dance
  • Ankara folk music
  • Oriental dance
  • Dancing
  • Turkish and Rum meze
  • Fish
  • Meat
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks

The venue currently states that the weekend program also includes an oriental dance performance.

Weekly Music Program

The current published schedule includes:

Every day: Aşk-ı Ala Fasıl Orchestra

Wednesday and Saturday: Duygu Sancaktar

Friday: Aslı Maj

Sunday: Agop Çavuşyan

The entertainment continues until approximately 1:00 AM.

Opening Hours

The venue currently states:

Every day: 09:00–02:00

with the kitchen operating until approximately 01:00.

Location

Çapari Sokak No. 55, Kumkapı, Fatih.

It is only a short walk from the Kumkapı railway station area.

Price Level

Current listings place the average spending around ₺2,000 per person, although the final bill depends on the chosen menu and alcohol.

The venue also offers fixed menus with different quantities of rakı, wine, beer or soft drinks depending on the number of guests.

Best For

Fasıl

Live Turkish music

Dancing

Oriental shows

Large groups

Celebrations

Visitors who want dinner and entertainment together

My Verdict

Entertainment: 10/10

Live music: 10/10

Traditional Kumkapı atmosphere: 9/10

Best for: A full Turkish meyhane entertainment night

21. Sakman — Kadıköy’s Music-Oriented Nightlife Option

Why Sakman Is Worth Mentioning

Sakman belongs in a slightly different category.

I would not describe it as one of Istanbul’s purest traditional meyhanes.

Instead, it is relevant to travelers interested in Kadıköy live music and meyhane-style nightlife.

Located in Osmanağa, it is surrounded by the dense nightlife environment of Kadıköy.

Best For

Live music

Young travelers

Kadıköy nightlife

Groups of friends

Important Distinction

Sakman should not be presented as a historic meyhane in the same category as Safa, Yakup 2 or Asmalı Cavit.

Its relevance is its music-oriented nightlife experience.

How I Would Divide the Meyhanes in This Guide

This is the distinction I recommend keeping throughout the article so readers do not confuse completely different experiences.

Traditional and Historic Meyhanes

Asmalı Cavit

Yakup 2

Refik

Safa Meyhanesi

Agora Meyhanesi 1890

Kör Agop

Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi

These are the places to prioritize if the main objective is understanding traditional Istanbul meyhane culture.

Modern and Stylish Meyhanes

Vişneli Meyhane

Eleos

Giritli

Sofyalı 9

These are better suited to visitors looking for food, atmosphere, design, views and a more refined dinner.

Entertainment-Oriented Meyhanes

Sade Meyhane

Ziyade Fasıl

İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi

Kumkapı Sütliman Fasıl Meyhane

These are the strongest options when the evening needs to include live music, fasıl, dancing or stage entertainment.

Kadıköy Music-Oriented Meyhanes

Ziyade Fasıl

Gri Meyhane

İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi

BİBUSE Musiki Meyhanesi

Sakman

These are particularly relevant for visitors who want to experience the Asian side of Istanbul at night.

Which Ones Actually Have Dancing and Shows?

This is probably the most important distinction for your article.

Venue Live Music Fasıl Dancing/Shows Main Experience
Asmalı Cavit Limited/varies Not the main focus No Traditional meyhane
Yakup 2 Not the main focus Traditional atmosphere No Food & conversation
Refik Limited Traditional No Rakı & meze
Safa Not the main focus Traditional No Historic meyhane
Vişneli Atmospheric No major stage focus No Stylish modern meyhane
Giritli No major entertainment focus No No Fine meze & seafood
Eleos No regular live program No No Seafood & view
Sade Yes Yes/varies Yes Entertainment
Ziyade Fasıl Yes Yes Yes Dinner & show
İkinci Kat Rum Yes Yes Yes Greek/Turkish music & dance
Gri Meyhane Yes Varies Varies Kadıköy nightlife
BİBUSE Music-focused Yes/varies Varies Music & meze
Sütliman Kumkapı Yes Yes Yes Full entertainment
Kör Agop Yes/varies Traditional Varies Kumkapı meyhane
Cumhuriyet Yes Yes Limited Fasıl & traditional music

The Most Important Correction to the Original Article

After checking these venues more carefully, I would not describe every establishment in the article as offering live music.

That would be misleading.

A proper Istanbul meyhane guide should tell the reader exactly what they are getting.

If you want quiet rakı, meze and conversation, choose places such as Asmalı Cavit, Yakup 2, Refik or Safa.

If you want a stylish modern dinner with views, consider Vişneli, Eleos or Giritli.

If you want music, dancing and entertainment, prioritize Sade, Ziyade Fasıl, İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi or Sütliman Kumkapı.

That distinction makes the guide substantially more useful for an international traveler planning an Istanbul tour.

Recommended New Additions to the Final Article

If you want to append only the strongest additions rather than all of the secondary names, I would definitely add these:

Safa Meyhanesi

Vişneli Meyhane

Sade Meyhane

Ziyade Fasıl

İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi

Kumkapı Sütliman Fasıl Meyhane

And then keep:

Gri Meyhane

BİBUSE Musiki Meyhanesi

Sakman

as additional Kadıköy alternatives.

This gives the article something the original version lacked: a genuine distinction between historic meyhanes, modern meyhanes, and entertainment-oriented fasıl meyhanes.

One particularly important finding is Sütliman Kumkapı. Its current official program explicitly confirms daily fasıl, live performances, dancing and weekend oriental shows, so it is unquestionably relevant to the kind of Turkish nightlife experience you originally wanted this article to cover.

And İkinci Kat Rum Meyhanesi is another particularly strong addition because current listings specifically mention live music, dancing, sirtaki and zeibekiko rather than merely describing it as a restaurant.

Finally, Vişneli should definitely be included. The earlier information suggesting that it was closed was outdated; current 2026 listings show it operating, and recent Istanbul guides continue to list it as a new-generation meyhane in Cihangir

Which Meyhane Should You Choose?

The answer depends entirely on the experience you want.

Meyhane Best For Price Level Atmosphere
Asmalı Cavit Classic first meyhane experience Medium–High Intimate
Yakup 2 Traditional atmosphere Medium–High Classic
Refik Rakı and conversation Medium–High Quiet/Traditional
Giritli Refined seafood High Elegant
Eleos Views and Aegean/Rum cuisine High Elegant
Agora 1890 History and Balat Medium–High Historic
İmroz Nevizade atmosphere Medium–High Lively
Cumhuriyet Fasıl and music Medium–High Lively
İsmet Baba Bosphorus seafood High Relaxed
Kör Agop Historic Kumkapı Medium–High Traditional
Sofyalı 9 Romantic dinner Medium–High Intimate
Safa Old Istanbul atmosphere Medium Traditional

Which Meyhane Is Best for Couples?

My first choices would be:

Giritli

Eleos

Sofyalı 9

İsmet Baba

The choice depends on what you want.

For romance and refined food, choose Giritli.

For a panoramic view, choose Eleos.

For an intimate historic atmosphere, choose Sofyalı 9.

For Bosphorus atmosphere, choose İsmet Baba.

Which Meyhane Is Best for Singles?

Being single is not a problem at a meyhane.

However, the social experience is different from a bar.

A traditional meyhane is usually more enjoyable when you have someone to talk to.

If you are traveling alone, choose a smaller establishment where sitting at the bar or a small table is comfortable.

I would choose:

Asmalı Cavit

Refik

Sofyalı 9

rather than a large fixed-menu entertainment venue.

Can Foreign Tourists Go to a Meyhane?

Absolutely.

Many Istanbul meyhanes regularly welcome international visitors.

The best ones are not designed exclusively for tourists, which is actually part of their attraction.

You do not need to speak Turkish to enjoy the experience.

However, learning a few words can make the evening more enjoyable.

Meze = appetizers

Rakı = anise-flavored spirit

Balık = fish

Su = water

Hesap = bill

Rezervasyon = reservation

Fasıl = traditional instrumental/vocal music performance

Can Women Go to Meyhanes?

Yes.

Modern Istanbul meyhane culture is not an exclusively male environment.

Women regularly dine at meyhanes, whether with friends, partners, colleagues or family.

The historical development is interesting because women were not always present in the same way they are today. The Guide Istanbul notes that women became increasingly accepted as customers during the Republican period, and the change became an important part of the transformation of meyhane culture.

Can Single Men Enter Meyhanes?

Yes.

There is generally no rule requiring couples or groups.

However, certain premium establishments or fixed-menu entertainment venues may operate differently on particular nights.

If you are traveling alone, call ahead if the venue is particularly formal or reservation-heavy.

Is There a Dress Code?

Most traditional Istanbul meyhanes do not require formal dress.

Smart casual is the safest choice.

For men:

  • Clean trousers or smart jeans
  • Polo shirt or shirt
  • Clean shoes

For women:

  • Casual elegant clothing
  • Dress, trousers or smart casual outfit
  • Comfortable but presentable shoes

For premium establishments such as Giritli or Eleos, I would dress slightly more elegantly.

Avoid:

  • Beachwear
  • Flip-flops
  • Sportswear
  • Very dirty or heavily casual clothing

The atmosphere is part of the experience, and dressing appropriately shows respect for the establishment.

What Time Should You Go to a Meyhane?

This is one of the most important practical questions.

Do not arrive at 11:30 PM expecting to experience the full evening.

For most traditional meyhanes, I recommend:

7:00–8:00 PM: ideal for dinner

8:00–9:00 PM: ideal for a lively atmosphere

9:00–10:00 PM: strongest atmosphere in many establishments

10:30 PM onward: increasingly social and music-focused where applicable

If you are going specifically for fasıl, ask the restaurant when the musicians begin.

The schedule varies.

Which Nights Are Best?

Monday to Thursday

Better for:

  • Conversation
  • Couples
  • Quieter dining
  • Business dinners

Friday

Excellent for:

  • Full atmosphere
  • Live music
  • Groups
  • Social evenings

Saturday

Usually the busiest night.

Reservations become particularly important.

Sunday

Some meyhanes close, while others operate normally.

Do not assume that every famous meyhane is open Sunday night.

Does Every Meyhane Have Live Music?

No.

This is a very important distinction.

The idea that every Turkish meyhane has a live band playing all night is a tourist stereotype.

Some are intentionally quiet because the purpose is conversation.

Some have traditional fasıl.

Some have live Turkish music.

Some have background music only.

For example, Eleos currently does not appear to offer regular live music, while Kör Agop lists live music among its features and Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi is specifically associated with fasıl.

If music is the reason you are visiting, ask before booking.

What Is Fasıl?

Fasıl is a traditional Turkish musical format involving a sequence of instrumental and vocal performances.

In the context of a meyhane, fasıl is not necessarily a “concert.”

It is part of the atmosphere.

You eat.

You drink.

The musicians perform.

People sing along.

The evening gradually becomes more energetic.

For a first-time visitor wanting the classic image of a Turkish rakı night, a good fasıl evening can be unforgettable.

How Long Should You Stay?

I would allow 2.5 to 4 hours.

A proper meyhane dinner is not designed to be rushed.

If you sit down at 8:00 PM, leaving at 9:00 PM means you have barely experienced it.

A good evening might look like:

8:00 PM: arrive

8:15 PM: choose cold meze

9:00 PM: ara sıcak

9:30 PM: fish or main course

10:00 PM: music and conversation

10:30–11:00 PM: dessert, fruit or coffee

That is much closer to the traditional rhythm.

What Should You Order at Your First Meyhane?

If you have never experienced one, do not order ten dishes immediately.

Start with four or five cold meze.

I would choose:

Fava

Haydari

Eggplant salad

Lakerda

Deniz börülcesi

Then add one or two hot dishes:

Shrimp casserole

Calamari

Arnavut ciğeri

Hot börek

Then decide whether you actually need a main course.

This is important because meze portions accumulate quickly.

What Is Rakı Etiquette at a Meyhane?

You do not need to be an expert.

The important thing is to drink slowly.

Rakı is normally served with water and often accompanied by food.

It is not intended to be consumed like a shot.

The traditional experience is deliberately slow.

Food and conversation are as important as the alcohol.

Can You Go to a Meyhane Without Drinking Alcohol?

Yes.

You can order:

  • Ayran
  • Soft drinks
  • Water
  • Turkish tea
  • Coffee
  • Non-alcoholic beverages

Some restaurants are more alcohol-centered than others, but a meyhane is fundamentally also a food and social experience.

If you do not drink alcohol, tell the waiter clearly.

What Are the Legal Rules About Alcohol?

Alcohol may not legally be sold or served to anyone under 18 in Turkey. Istanbul’s governor’s office has specifically reiterated the prohibition on selling alcohol to people under 18 and the requirement that alcohol consumption take place in appropriately licensed premises.

So if you are traveling with children or teenagers, do not assume that because a restaurant admits families, alcohol can be served to everyone at the table.

For travelers aged 18 and over, normal alcohol-service rules apply.

Do You Need a Reservation?

For the most famous meyhanes:

Friday and Saturday: yes, I strongly recommend it.

For Monday through Thursday:

A walk-in may be possible at some establishments.

But if you are traveling from another country and have only a few nights in Istanbul, I would not gamble on availability.

Reserve.

This is particularly important for:

Asmalı Cavit

Yakup 2

Giritli

Eleos

Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi

Kör Agop

How to Reach the Best Meyhanes From Taksim

Asmalımescit

Asmalı Cavit, Yakup 2, Refik and Sofyalı 9 are all relatively convenient from Taksim.

You can walk down İstiklal toward Tünel and continue into Asmalımescit.

Nevizade

Walk down İstiklal toward the Fish Market and enter the side streets.

This is where you will find İmroz and numerous other meyhanes.

Eleos

Eleos is directly on İstiklal Avenue in Hıdivyal Palas, making it particularly easy for visitors staying around Taksim.

Kumkapı

For Kör Agop, take transportation toward the Historic Peninsula and continue toward Kumkapı.

A taxi is convenient if you are going directly from Taksim for dinner.

How to Reach the Best Meyhanes From Eminönü

Balat

Agora 1890 is relatively close to Eminönü by taxi or bus.

Kumkapı

Kumkapı is also relatively close.

Beyoğlu

You can cross toward Karaköy and continue uphill toward Galata and Asmalımescit.

Kadıköy

If you want a completely different experience, take the ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy and explore the Asian-side meyhanes.

GoTürkiye specifically identifies Kadıköy, Moda, Balat, Karaköy, Beyoğlu, Kurtuluş, Yedikule and Çengelköy as important areas for experiencing Istanbul’s meyhane culture.

Which Meyhanes Are Best for a First-Time Istanbul Visitor?

If this is your first visit and you do not want to overcomplicate things, I would narrow the choices to five.

For the Classic Experience

Asmalı Cavit

For Traditional Music

Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi

For History

Agora Meyhanesi 1890

For Seafood and Elegance

Giritli

For Bosphorus Atmosphere

İsmet Baba

These five cover five very different sides of Istanbul’s meyhane culture.

A Perfect First Meyhane Evening in Istanbul

If I were designing a Istanbul tour itinerary for a traveler who had never experienced a Turkish meyhane, I would not send them randomly to the first restaurant that appears on Google Maps.

I would make the evening part of the itinerary.

Start around 6:00 PM.

If you choose Asmalımescit, walk through Galata and İstiklal before dinner.

Arrive at the meyhane around 7:30 or 8:00 PM.

Start with several cold meze.

Order rakı, wine or your preferred drink.

Take your time.

Add ara sıcak.

Listen to the conversation around you.

If the venue has fasıl, allow the music to become part of the evening.

Order your main course only if you still want one.

Finish with fruit, dessert or Turkish coffee.

Then walk through the surrounding streets rather than immediately taking a taxi back to your hotel.

That is a much more authentic Istanbul evening experience than simply going to a nightclub.

Meyhane Areas Worth Knowing

Asmalımescit

Best for classic central Istanbul meyhanes.

Asmalı Cavit, Yakup 2, Refik and Sofyalı 9

Nevizade

Best for a busier, more social atmosphere.

İmroz and surrounding meyhanes

Cankurtaran

Best for refined food near Sultanahmet.

Giritli

Balat

Best for history and atmosphere.

Agora 1890

Kumkapı

Best for traditional seafood, Armenian-influenced meze and music.

Kör Agop

Kuzguncuk

Best for Bosphorus atmosphere.

İsmet Baba

Yedikule

Best for an older, less tourist-oriented Istanbul experience.

Safa Meyhanesi

Meyhane vs Luxury Nightclub: Which Should You Choose?

If you want:

Dancing: choose a nightclub.

DJ: choose a club.

VIP table: choose a luxury nightclub.

Bosphorus party: choose a premium nightlife venue.

Rakı: choose a meyhane.

Meze: choose a meyhane.

Traditional Turkish music: choose a meyhane.

Conversation: choose a meyhane.

Turkish culinary culture: choose a meyhane.

A memorable local dinner: choose a meyhane.

They should not be treated as competing categories.

They are different sides of Istanbul after dark.

Why Meyhane Culture Is Worth Experiencing on a Turkey Trip

Many visitors plan a Turkey tour package around famous monuments, archaeological sites, beaches and landscapes.

Those are obviously important.

But Turkish food culture is also part of the journey.

A meyhane gives you something a museum cannot.

It puts you at a table with people.

It forces you to slow down.

It introduces you to ingredients that have been part of Istanbul’s culinary culture for generations.

And it reveals the multicultural history of the city through Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Ottoman, Aegean and Turkish influences.

That makes a meyhane particularly valuable for travelers booking Turkey tour packages who want something beyond conventional sightseeing.

How to Include a Meyhane in an Istanbul Tour

A well-planned Istanbul tour can easily include a meyhane evening.

If You Spend the Day in Sultanahmet

Visit:

Hagia Sophia

Blue Mosque

Topkapı Palace

Grand Bazaar

Spice Bazaar

Then choose:

Giritli or Kumkapı

If You Spend the Day Around Galata

Visit:

Galata Tower

Galata streets

İstiklal Avenue

Pera Museum

Then choose:

Asmalı Cavit, Yakup 2, Refik or Sofyalı 9

If You Explore Balat

Visit:

Fener

Balat

Golden Horn

Historic streets

Then choose:

Agora Meyhanesi 1890

If You Explore the Asian Side

Visit:

Kadıköy

Moda

Üsküdar

Kuzguncuk

Then choose:

İsmet Baba

This is one of the easiest ways to make your Istanbul travel itinerary feel less like a checklist of attractions and more like an actual experience of the city.

Final Ranking: My 12 Best Meyhanes in Istanbul

If I had to rank them according to the experience I believe a traveler should prioritize:

1. Asmalı Cavit — Best overall classic meyhane experience

2. Yakup 2 — Traditional, established and atmospheric

3. Refik — Excellent for rakı, meze and conversation

4. Giritli — Best refined meze and seafood experience

5. Eleos — Best combination of meze, seafood and views

6. Agora Meyhanesi 1890 — Best historic atmosphere in Balat

7. Krependeki İmroz — Best Nevizade experience

8. Tarihi Cumhuriyet Meyhanesi — Best for traditional fasıl

9. İsmet Baba — Best Bosphorus-side meyhane

10. Kör Agop — Best for historic Kumkapı culture

11. Sofyalı 9 — Best intimate and romantic choice

12. Tarihi Safa Meyhanesi — Best for an older-style local experience

The ranking should not be interpreted as “number 12 is bad.”

It means that if I had only one evening, I would prioritize Asmalı Cavit.

If I wanted music, I would consider Cumhuriyet.

If I wanted seafood and elegance, Giritli or Eleos.

If I wanted history, Agora.

If I wanted the Bosphorus, İsmet Baba.

If I wanted traditional Kumkapı, Kör Agop.

That is the more useful way to choose a meyhane.

The Most Important Advice Before You Go

Do not choose a meyhane simply because it has thousands of reviews from tourists.

Do not assume that expensive means authentic.

Do not order fish without asking the price.

Do not order ten meze before seeing the portion sizes.

Do not expect every meyhane to have live music.

Do not arrive at 11 PM expecting the traditional dinner experience.

And do not treat a meyhane as another type of nightclub.

The beauty of a Turkish meyhane is precisely that it operates at a different rhythm.

You arrive hungry.

You choose a few dishes.

You pour your drink.

You talk.

You taste.

You order another plate.

The music may begin.

The table gets louder.

The evening becomes longer.

And eventually you realize that you have been sitting there for three or four hours without once looking at the clock.

That is what makes the best meyhanes in Istanbul so different from almost every other form of nightlife in the city.

For a traveler planning Istanbul tour packages, I would consider one proper meyhane evening almost as important as visiting one more famous attraction. You will not simply have dinner. You will experience one of the city’s oldest surviving forms of social life.

And if you are continuing beyond Istanbul on Turkey tour packages, this is one of those experiences that gives you a better understanding of Turkish culture before you move on to Cappadocia, Ephesus, Antalya, Pamukkale or the Aegean coast.
