Important: Airport procedures, airline counters, transport timetables, prices, security procedures and immigration requirements can change. The information below reflects the latest information available at the time of writing in August 2026. Before travelling, confirm flight-specific and legal requirements with your airline, the relevant Turkish authorities and your travel agency.

Istanbul Airport at a Glance

Istanbul Airport is the main international gateway to Istanbul and the principal hub of Turkish Airlines. It replaced Istanbul Atatürk Airport as the city’s principal commercial airport after the major flight transfer in April 2019.

The airport is located in the Arnavutköy district on the European side of Istanbul, close to the Black Sea and roughly 35 km from central Istanbul. Turkish Airlines describes the airport as approximately 35 km from the city centre.

The Turkish State Airports Authority, DHMİ, confirms the airport’s IATA code as IST, ICAO code as LTFM, and states that the airport operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

One thing travelers should never confuse is IST and SAW. IST is Istanbul Airport on the European side. SAW is Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Asian side. They are different airports and a flight booked from one cannot simply be reached by walking across the city to the other.

Istanbul Airport Terminal Map

Why Istanbul Airport Is So Large

Istanbul Airport was planned as a replacement for Atatürk Airport and as a major international transfer hub between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The airport site covers approximately 76.5 million square metres. The first phase included a terminal of approximately 1.4 million square metres.

The first phase was designed for approximately 90 million passengers annually. The long-term master plan has been designed around much larger capacity, with the original project vision allowing for expansion toward 150 million and eventually around 200 million passengers per year.

The scale becomes easier to understand when you are actually inside the terminal. This is not an airport where you should arrive at the last minute and assume that the gate is a five-minute walk from check-in.

The airport’s single terminal spreads into several large concourses, and a gate shown on your boarding pass can be considerably farther away than it initially appears.

When Was Istanbul Airport Built?

The project has several different dates because the tender, groundbreaking, site handover and actual construction were separate stages.

The consortium won the construction and operating tender on 3 May 2013.

The formal groundbreaking ceremony took place on 7 June 2014.

The site was officially handed over and major construction began in May 2015.

The first phase was completed in approximately 42 months after the start of the main construction period.

The airport was formally inaugurated on 29 October 2018, the 95th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye.

Commercial operations expanded gradually, with the complete transfer of scheduled passenger operations from Atatürk Airport taking place in April 2019.

So when someone says “Istanbul Airport was built in four years,” they are referring broadly to the main construction period. The project itself began several years earlier through planning, tendering and design.

Who Designed Istanbul Airport?

Istanbul Airport was not designed by one architect working alone.

It involved a large international design team.

The principal architectural team included:

  • Grimshaw Architects
  • Nordic Office of Architecture
  • Haptic Architects
  • Scott Brownrigg

The international design team worked with Turkish delivery and local architectural firms as the project moved from concept into detailed design and construction.

Arup was involved in the airport’s master planning and later project and programme management work, including Turkish Airlines’ facilities and passenger-experience elements.

Which Companies Built Istanbul Airport?

The airport was developed under a build-operate-transfer model by the consortium behind İGA.

The main consortium companies were:

  • Cengiz
  • Mapa
  • Limak
  • Kolin
  • Kalyon

The project was awarded as a 25-year build-operate-transfer concession.

This was an enormous infrastructure project rather than simply a terminal-building project. Runways, taxiways, aprons, air-traffic-control facilities, cargo facilities, roads, parking and supporting infrastructure were all part of the wider development.

What Is Special About Istanbul Airport’s Architecture?

The terminal was deliberately designed to look connected to Istanbul rather than resembling an anonymous international airport.

The vaulted roof and filtered daylight were influenced by Istanbul’s mosques and traditional covered markets.

The architectural team has described the roof as drawing inspiration from the city’s traditional architectural language, while translating it into a modern airport environment.

The airport’s enormous main terminal is particularly notable because such a large passenger facility operates under a single roof.

The air-traffic-control tower is another recognizable element. Its design is inspired by the tulip, a flower strongly associated with Turkish cultural history.

The terminal also became the world’s largest LEED Gold-certified building when its certification was confirmed in 2020.

How Many Terminals and Concourses Does Istanbul Airport Have?

This is one of the most confusing things about IST.

Istanbul Airport has one main passenger terminal building, serving both domestic and international passengers.

Inside that terminal are several concourses or piers.

The airport is generally described as having five independent concourses: A, B, D, F and G, with C and E integrated more directly into the main terminal rather than functioning as separate long piers. There are 143 passenger boarding bridges in the first phase.

International and Domestic Concourses

The broad arrangement is:

ConcourseMain use
AInternational
BInternational
CIntegrated terminal gates
DInternational
EIntegrated terminal gates
FMainly international, with some domestic use
GDomestic

Concourse G is primarily domestic, while A, B, D and most of F serve international operations. C and E are directly connected to the central terminal structure.

How Many Gates Does Istanbul Airport Have?

Gate numbering is more complicated than simply counting one number after another because some gates have multiple boarding positions or lettered sub-gates.

A current terminal plan shows the main gate groups as:

  • A1–A11
  • B1–B18
  • C1–C4
  • D1–D17
  • E1–E4
  • F1–F19
  • G1–G11

The exact operational boarding position can include sub-designations such as A1A, A1B or F1A/F1B.

That means you should always check the actual boarding gate displayed on the airport’s flight information screens rather than relying on a generic airport map.

How Long Does It Take to Walk to a Gate?

This depends entirely on the gate.

Some gates are close to the central terminal.

Others require a substantial walk along one of the piers.

Moving walkways are available, but they do not eliminate the distance.

For a large international airport such as IST, I recommend checking your gate immediately after security and starting toward the concourse rather than spending most of your connection time in the central shopping area.

The airport’s size is particularly relevant for passengers with elderly relatives, children or reduced mobility.

Istanbul Airport Terminal Map

The best way to navigate IST is to use the current interactive terminal map rather than relying on an old PDF circulating online.

The official Turkish Airlines terminal map allows passengers to locate check-in counters, gates, restaurants, shops, ATMs and pharmacies.

Official interactive terminal map: Istanbul Airport Terminal Map

The map is particularly useful before leaving your hotel because you can identify your airline’s check-in area before arriving.

How to Navigate Istanbul Airport

Think of the airport as a central hub with long arms extending toward the gates.

The basic sequence for a departing passenger is:

Airport entrance → check-in → security → passport control if international → central airside area → concourse → gate

For an arriving passenger:

Aircraft → passport control if required → baggage claim → customs → arrivals hall → transport level

For a connecting passenger, the route depends on whether the connection is:

  • International to international
  • International to domestic
  • Domestic to international
  • Domestic to domestic

This distinction is very important.

Istanbul Airport Arrivals

After an international arrival, follow signs for:

Passport Control → Baggage Claim → Customs → Exit

If you have checked baggage and are entering Turkey, you normally collect it before customs.

If you are continuing internationally on an eligible through-ticket, you may instead follow International Transfer signs without entering Turkey.

Don’t simply follow passengers heading toward the public arrivals hall if you are supposed to remain airside for a connection.

Istanbul Airport Departures

For departure, first find your airline’s check-in area.

Turkish Airlines uses several check-in islands rather than one small counter. Its official guidance identifies counter islands D, E, F, G, H, J, K and L, with different areas used for domestic and international passengers.

After check-in:

Security → passport control if applicable → gates

International passengers should allow more time because passport and security procedures can create queues during busy periods.

Istanbul Airport Transfer and Transit Guide

IST is one of Europe’s major connecting airports, so transit passengers are a major part of its operation.

The first question is whether your onward flight is on the same ticket or a separate booking.

That difference can completely change what you need to do.

International to International Transit

If you arrive internationally and continue internationally on a properly connected itinerary, you may be able to remain airside.

Turkish Airlines states that eligible passengers arriving from abroad and continuing abroad on a single-ticket itinerary can proceed directly toward the connecting gate after collecting cabin baggage, without repeating normal arrival procedures. If they do not already have the next boarding pass, they can visit the transit check-in counter.

Follow:

International Transfer → Security if directed → Connecting Gate

Do not follow signs toward baggage claim unless your itinerary requires you to enter Turkey.

International to Domestic Transit

This is different.

If you arrive internationally and your next flight is domestic, you normally need to enter Turkey.

Turkish Airlines’ transfer guidance instructs eligible passengers to complete passport formalities, collect checked baggage where required, proceed to the domestic area, check in if necessary, re-check baggage and continue to the domestic boarding gate.

You therefore need to satisfy Turkey’s entry requirements.

If your nationality requires a Turkish visa, a domestic connection can therefore be very different from an international-to-international transit.

Domestic to International Transit

If you arrive on a domestic flight and continue internationally, the procedure depends on the ticket and airline relationship.

For eligible Turkish Airlines/Star Alliance or codeshare itineraries, baggage may be handled through and the passenger can continue to international departure procedures.

For separate tickets or airlines without an eligible baggage agreement, you may need to collect your baggage, leave the domestic area and check in again for the international flight.

Separate Tickets at Istanbul Airport

This is where travelers often get into trouble.

If you have:

Flight 1: London → Istanbul

and separately:

Flight 2: Istanbul → Bangkok

you should not assume that your baggage will automatically be transferred.

If the airlines do not have an interline agreement, you may need to:

  1. Enter Turkey.
  2. Collect your baggage.
  3. Pass customs.
  4. Go to departures.
  5. Check in again.
  6. Check your baggage.
  7. Pass security and passport control.
  8. Go to the next gate.

Your Turkish entry requirements therefore matter.

How Much Connection Time Do You Need at Istanbul Airport?

There is no single safe minimum for every itinerary.

A protected international-to-international connection on one ticket is very different from a self-transfer involving baggage and immigration.

For a simple through-ticket connection, the airline’s published minimum connection time is the relevant starting point.

For a self-transfer, allow substantially more time.

I would not plan a short connection at IST if you must collect baggage, pass immigration, re-check in and go through security again.

Do Transit Passengers Need a Turkish Visa?

Not necessarily.

If you remain in the international transit area and meet the applicable transit conditions, you generally do not need to enter Turkey simply because you are changing aircraft.

Turkish Airlines states that passengers who remain in the transit area do not need a Turkish visa simply for the connection.

But this does not mean that every connection is visa-free.

If your itinerary requires you to pass immigration, collect baggage or leave the airport, you need to satisfy Turkey’s entry requirements.

This is one of the situations where you should check with your airline or travel agency before departure rather than relying on a general internet rule.

Istanbul Airport Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available at Istanbul Airport.

The main network is generally shown as iGA WiFi.

Passengers can authenticate using a mobile phone/SMS method or use airport Wi-Fi kiosks to obtain an access code by scanning their passport or identity document. Recent airport information describes the service as free and unlimited.

How to Connect to Istanbul Airport Wi-Fi

  1. Open Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Select iGA WiFi.
  3. Wait for the login page.
  4. Choose mobile/SMS authentication if your phone can receive SMS.
  5. Alternatively, use a Wi-Fi kiosk and scan your passport.
  6. Enter the access code.
  7. Connect.

If you are arriving without Turkish mobile service, the passport-kiosk method can be particularly useful.

Is Istanbul Airport Wi-Fi Safe?

Treat it like any public Wi-Fi.

Don’t assume that a free airport network is private.

For banking, sensitive business communication and other confidential activities, use appropriate security measures.

Our separate guide Internet in Turkey for Tourists: 5G, Wi-Fi, Mobile Data, VPNs and Online Safety explains Turkey’s internet environment and VPN considerations in more detail.

Istanbul Airport Information Desks and Passenger Assistance

The airport has staffed information points, digital information systems and passenger guidance facilities.

Istanbul Airport has also integrated artificial intelligence into its passenger guidance system.

According to Airports Council International’s description of the airport’s digital passenger services, the airport’s virtual assistant can answer more than 1,000 questions and operate through the airport’s website, mobile application, WhatsApp and call centre. Passenger-guidance robots also use the system to assist travelers inside the terminal.

This is useful when you are trying to find:

  • Your gate
  • Check-in area
  • Baggage claim
  • Transport
  • Parking
  • Restaurants
  • Lounges
  • Toilets
  • Pharmacies
  • Other passenger services

The airport’s official general contact is 444 1 İGA / 444 1 442.

Istanbul Airport App

The Istanbul Airport app is useful if you are spending time at IST.

It can help with:

  • Flight information
  • Terminal navigation
  • Airport services
  • Restaurants
  • Shops
  • Lounges
  • Passenger services

It is particularly useful because the terminal is too large to navigate efficiently using memory alone.

Istanbul Airport for Passengers With Disabilities

Istanbul Airport provides services for passengers with reduced mobility and other accessibility needs.

The airport and its premium services include facilities designed for passengers with disabilities, while Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul Airport lounge information also specifically lists disabled passenger access.

If you need wheelchair assistance, request it from your airline before the flight.

Do not wait until arriving at the airport if you know you will require assistance.

Tell the airline whether you:

  • Can walk short distances
  • Need wheelchair assistance
  • Cannot climb stairs
  • Need assistance to your seat
  • Are travelling with your own wheelchair
  • Are travelling with a powered mobility device

The exact assistance procedure depends on the airline and the passenger’s needs.

Istanbul Airport for Elderly Passengers

Istanbul Airport is accessible, but its size can be tiring.

An elderly passenger who can walk normally may still face long distances between:

  • Check-in
  • Security
  • Passport control
  • Lounge
  • Gate

The airport provides buggy services, and iGA offers paid premium buggy assistance.

Passengers aged 65 and above receive a 35% discount on certain iGA premium services, including Sleepod and lounge services at the relevant sales points.

For elderly travelers, I recommend arranging assistance in advance rather than assuming the gate will be nearby.

Istanbul Airport for Families and Children

Families have access to child-friendly facilities, family areas and children’s services.

Turkish Airlines’ international lounge at Istanbul Airport also includes a children’s play area.

Security screening applies to strollers, pushchairs and similar child equipment.

Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority states that baby strollers, child seats, walkers and similar equipment can be subject to X-ray inspection.

Keep children’s medicines, documents and essential items easily accessible.

Istanbul Airport Buggy Service

The electric buggy service can be very useful when you have:

  • An elderly passenger
  • A disabled passenger
  • Small children
  • Heavy hand luggage
  • A long walk to the gate
  • A tight connection

iGA lists iGA Buggy as one of its premium passenger services.

The airport also has designated buggy stations in different parts of the terminal.

Because availability and pricing can vary, check the current service through the Istanbul Airport app, iGA Pass or service desk.

Istanbul Airport Lounge Options

There are several types of lounges at IST.

The most important distinction is between airline lounges and paid airport lounges.

Turkish Airlines Lounges

Turkish Airlines operates major international and domestic lounge facilities at Istanbul Airport.

Its international lounge services include:

  • Food and drinks
  • Wi-Fi
  • Showers
  • Children’s area
  • Work facilities
  • Flight information
  • Meeting rooms
  • Accessible facilities
  • Rest areas

The international facilities operate 24 hours.

Access depends on your ticket, Miles&Smiles status, Star Alliance status and other eligibility rules.

iGA Lounge

iGA operates paid lounges accessible to passengers regardless of airline class, subject to availability and entry rules.

The iGA Lounge can be purchased through iGA Pass, the airport app, call centre or lounge desk. The airport currently lists a six-hour usage period and a published adult price of ₺2,500 on its current English iGA Pass page, although prices can change.

Passengers aged 65 and above are eligible for a 35% discount at iGA service sales points.

iGA Pop-Up Lounge

The iGA Pop-Up Lounge is designed for shorter waiting periods.

The current service includes:

  • Seating
  • Wi-Fi
  • Snacks
  • Hot and cold drinks
  • Charging stations
  • Flight information
  • Television

The current published international price is approximately €41.67 including VAT, with a three-hour usage period.

For a long connection, the main lounge is generally more useful.

For a short wait near the gate, the Pop-Up Lounge can be more practical.

Sleeping at Istanbul Airport

You do not necessarily need to book a hotel for an overnight connection.

IST has designated rest areas and paid sleeping facilities.

Free Rest Areas

The airport has semi-reclined rest seating in various airside areas.

These can be found around several concourses, including areas near A, B, C, D, E, F and G gates.

The quality and privacy vary considerably.

If you want genuine privacy, use a paid sleep facility instead.

iGA Sleepod

iGA Sleepod provides private sleeping cabins in the international departures area near the D gates.

The service operates 24 hours.

The current published rates including taxes are:

TimePublished price
07:00–19:00€17.50/hour
19:00–23:00€25/hour
23:00–03:00€30/hour
03:00–07:00€25/hour

A comfort kit with blanket, pillow and pillowcase costs an additional €5. Passengers aged 65+ receive a 35% discount at the relevant sales points.

These prices are current published rates and should be checked before purchase.

Hotels at Istanbul Airport

If you have a long overnight layover and prefer a proper bed, airport accommodation is more comfortable than trying to sleep in the terminal.

YOTELAIR Istanbul Airport is located within the airport complex and is designed specifically for transit passengers.

There are also hotels around the wider airport area.

For longer stays, however, consider whether you actually want to remain at the airport.

If you have a sufficiently long layover and meet Turkey’s entry requirements, leaving the airport to explore Istanbul may make more sense.

This is where planning your Istanbul Tour: Best Packages, Private Tours & Local Experiences can become useful.

istanbul airport

Can You Leave Istanbul Airport During a Long Layover?

Yes, if you are legally allowed to enter Turkey and have sufficient time.

But do not treat an eight-hour layover as eight free hours in Istanbul.

You need to account for:

  • Immigration
  • Baggage if applicable
  • Airport exit
  • Travel into the city
  • Traffic
  • Returning to the airport
  • Security
  • Passport control
  • Walking to your gate

Istanbul Airport is approximately 35 km from central Istanbul, and Turkish Airlines estimates an average taxi journey of around 60 minutes depending on traffic.

For a short connection, stay at the airport.

For a long layover, a pre-planned private transfer and carefully selected sightseeing route can make an airport stop much more useful.

Istanbul Airport Restaurants and Cafés

The terminal has a large selection of restaurants, cafés, fast-food outlets, bakeries and international brands.

Food is available both before and after security.

Because IST is open around the clock, many food outlets operate for extended hours, although individual opening times vary.

Prices inside the airport are generally higher than in central Istanbul.

If you have a few hours before departure, I would not spend your entire food budget at the first café you see after security.

Compare the options around the central airside area and your concourse.

Istanbul Airport Duty Free and Shopping

The duty-free area is one of the major commercial spaces inside the terminal.

You can find:

  • Perfume
  • Cosmetics
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Confectionery
  • Turkish products
  • Fashion
  • Watches
  • Jewellery
  • Electronics
  • Travel essentials

For travelers interested in Turkish souvenirs, however, the airport is not where I would do most of my shopping.

Our Best Souvenirs in Istanbul: Complete Shopping Guide explains where to compare prices and find greater choice in the city.

The Grand Bazaar and other traditional shopping districts offer a completely different experience and usually provide far more opportunity to compare products between individual shops.

You can also link this section to Grand Bazaar Istanbul: Kapalı Çarşı Complete Guide.

Istanbul Airport SIM Cards

There are operator shops at Istanbul Airport where travelers can obtain Turkish SIM cards.

The three major Turkish mobile operators are:

  • Turkcell
  • Vodafone Turkey
  • Türk Telekom

If you urgently need mobile data immediately after landing, buying at the airport is convenient.

If you are not in a hurry, however, I would usually compare prices with official operator stores in the city.

Airport tourist SIM packages can be significantly more expensive than city offers.

For a full comparison, link this section to:

Turkey SIM Card for Tourists: Best SIM Cards, Prices, eSIM, Coverage and Roaming in 2026

That article covers Turkish SIM registration, tourist packages, eSIM, roaming and the differences between Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom.

Should You Buy a SIM Card at Istanbul Airport?

My advice is simple.

If you need data immediately to contact your transfer driver, use maps or communicate with your hotel, buying a SIM at the airport can be worthwhile.

If you have Wi-Fi access and are being collected by a pre-arranged transfer, you can wait.

For many travelers, the better combination is:

Airport Wi-Fi on arrival → hotel Wi-Fi → Turkish SIM/eSIM after comparing prices.

Istanbul Airport Taxis

Taxis operate 24 hours a day at Istanbul Airport.

Turkish Airlines states that taxis operate around the clock and that the average trip between the airport and central Istanbul is approximately 60 minutes, depending on traffic.

The actual journey can be considerably longer during heavy Istanbul traffic.

Before entering a taxi:

  • Use the official airport taxi rank.
  • Avoid unsolicited drivers inside the terminal.
  • Confirm the destination.
  • Keep your luggage receipt where applicable.
  • Watch the meter.
  • Don’t accept a driver who insists on a fixed price without a clear reason.
  • Keep the vehicle information if you need to report a problem.

For families, groups or travelers with several suitcases, a pre-arranged private Istanbul Airport transfer can often be easier than taking several taxis.

Private Istanbul Airport Transfers

A private airport transfer can make sense if:

  • You have children.
  • You arrive late at night.
  • You have several bags.
  • You are travelling as a group.
  • You need to reach a hotel in Sultanahmet.
  • You have a tight schedule.
  • You want to go directly from the airport to a pre-arranged Istanbul tour.

For visitors arriving for a package holiday, arranging airport transfer together with accommodation and sightseeing is usually easier than dealing with each service separately after landing.

Car Rental at Istanbul Airport

Car-rental companies operate at Istanbul Airport.

Major brands available through the airport market include:

  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Enterprise
  • Europcar
  • Hertz
  • Sixt
  • Garenta
  • Avec
  • Cizgi
  • Alamo
  • OK Mobility

Current airport rental listings also show several of these companies operating at IST.

Should You Rent a Car in Istanbul?

For a city holiday, usually no.

Driving in central Istanbul can be tiring because of:

  • Traffic
  • Limited parking
  • Narrow streets
  • One-way systems
  • Tolls
  • Congestion
  • Difficult hotel access

A rental car becomes more useful if you are travelling beyond Istanbul, especially on a multi-city Turkey itinerary.

If your plan is simply Istanbul tour + Bosphorus + historic attractions + shopping, public transport, private transfers and organised tours are generally easier.

Istanbul Airport Public Transportation

There are three main public transport options:

Metro

HAVAİST

IETT buses

The airport is connected to the city through the M11 metro line and extensive bus services.

M11 Metro to Istanbul Airport

The M11 is the most useful rail connection for many travelers.

It connects Istanbul Airport with the city through Gayrettepe, where passengers can connect to other Istanbul Metro lines.

Turkish Airlines confirms that the M11 operates between Gayrettepe and Istanbul Airport.

The advantage is predictable travel time compared with road traffic.

The disadvantage is that many hotels in Sultanahmet, Taksim or other tourist areas require an additional metro, tram, bus or taxi connection.

For travelers carrying large luggage, that can make HAVAİST or a private transfer more convenient.

Where Is the Metro at Istanbul Airport?

Follow signs for:

Metro / M11

The metro station is connected to the terminal through the airport’s transport area.

Follow airport signs rather than trying to find the station from memory.

The terminal is well signposted, and the airport app can also help with navigation.

HAVAİST Airport Buses

HAVAİST is the dedicated airport shuttle network connecting Istanbul Airport with many parts of Istanbul.

The official HAVAİST website states that the airport stop is on Level -2, and passengers should go to the transportation level below arrivals.

HAVAİST buses also provide Wi-Fi and accept major bank cards.

Where Do HAVAİST Buses Depart?

After collecting your luggage and entering the arrivals hall:

Follow signs for Transportation → go down to Level -2 → HAVAİST

The exact platform depends on the destination.

Do not assume that the bus is always waiting at the same numbered bay.

The official timetable and airport screens should be checked on the day of travel.

Main HAVAİST Routes From Istanbul Airport

HAVAİST’s network changes over time, so the following is best treated as a practical 2026 guide rather than a permanent timetable.

Current route information includes connections toward destinations such as:

DestinationTypical role
TaksimCentral Istanbul / Beyoğlu
AksarayUseful connection toward historic peninsula
SultanahmetHistoric Istanbul
KadıköyAsian side
BeşiktaşEuropean waterfront
OtogarIntercity bus terminal
BeylikdüzüWestern Istanbul
AvcılarWestern Istanbul
HalkalıWestern Istanbul
MerterEuropean side
ArnavutköyLocal airport district
Sabiha Gökçen AirportAirport-to-airport transfer
SilivriFar western Istanbul

Recent 2026 published route information lists fares of roughly ₺350–₺515, depending on destination, with Taksim and Sultanahmet around ₺470 and Kadıköy/Sabiha Gökçen around ₺515 at the time of checking.

Because HAVAİST changes routes, schedules and prices, check the official timetable immediately before travelling.

Official HAVAİST Routes and Timetables

The operator specifically warns that traffic, accidents and other extraordinary circumstances can alter routes and departure times.

Does HAVAİST Run All Night?

Some HAVAİST routes operate late or around the clock, but frequency varies by destination.

Do not assume that every route has the same schedule.

The official HAVAİST timetable is the reliable source for the exact departure time on your travel date.

IETT Buses From Istanbul Airport

IETT, Istanbul’s municipal bus operator, also connects the airport with several parts of the city.

Current airport lines include:

  • H-1: Mahmutbey Metro
  • H-2: Mecidiyeköy
  • H-3: Halkalı
  • H-6: Yunus Emre / Arnavutköy
  • H-8: Hacıosman / Sarıyer
  • H-9: Cevizlibağ

The exact list and operating patterns can change, so check IETT before travelling.

HAVAİST is generally more convenient for tourists with large suitcases because it is specifically designed for airport passenger transport.

Istanbul Airport to Taksim

You have several options:

M11 + Metro connection

HAVAİST

Taxi

Private transfer

For a first-time visitor with luggage, HAVAİST or a private transfer is often simpler.

For a solo traveler comfortable with Istanbul’s metro system, M11 can be more predictable during heavy traffic.

Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet

The historic peninsula is not directly connected to IST by metro.

You can use:

M11 + connections

or

HAVAİST toward the historic centre

or

Taxi/private transfer

If you are carrying heavy luggage and staying in Sultanahmet, a private transfer can save a considerable amount of hassle.

Istanbul Airport to Kadıköy

Kadıköy is on the Asian side.

The practical options include:

M11 + metro connections

HAVAİST

Taxi/private transfer

HAVAİST currently operates an airport-Kadıköy connection, with published 2026 fares around ₺515 at the time of checking.

Istanbul Airport to Sabiha Gökçen Airport

This is an important route for passengers connecting between Istanbul’s two airports.

HAVAİST operates a direct airport-to-airport service.

Current published 2026 information lists the route at around ₺515, with journey time often around two hours depending on traffic.

Do not book a tight connection between IST and SAW.

Istanbul traffic can turn a nominal two-hour journey into a much longer one.

Istanbul Airport Parking

Istanbul Airport has large indoor/covered multi-storey and outdoor parking areas.

The official 2026 DHMİ tariff for passenger parking lists the following automobile rates:

Covered / Multi-Storey Parking

DurationAutomobile
0–1 hour₺250
1–3 hours₺300
3–6 hours₺450
6–12 hours₺550
12–24 hours₺740
7–15 days subscription₺5,920
Monthly subscription₺9,480

Outdoor Parking

DurationAutomobile
0–1 hour₺190
1–3 hours₺220
3–6 hours₺330
6–12 hours₺370
12–24 hours₺520
Monthly subscription₺6,670

These are the 2026 DHMİ published tariffs and can be changed by later revisions.

For short visits, the covered car park is more convenient.

For longer parking, the outdoor area is considerably cheaper.

Istanbul Airport Lost and Found

If you lose something inside the airport, don’t immediately assume the airline is responsible.

There are several possibilities:

Lost inside the terminal: contact airport lost-property services.

Lost on the aircraft: contact your airline or its ground handler.

Lost on HAVAİST: contact HAVAİST lost and found.

HAVAİST publishes a dedicated lost-property number of 0538 231 74 83.

For an item lost during a flight, contact the airline or ground-handling company as quickly as possible.

Keep:

  • Flight number
  • Date
  • Seat number
  • Baggage tag
  • Description of the item
  • Approximate location where you last saw it

Turkey now operates a unified emergency system. Police, ambulance, fire, gendarmerie and other emergency services are coordinated through 112.

You can also go directly to airport security or police personnel if you are already inside the terminal.

For non-emergency airline or airport service problems, don’t call 112.

Go to:

  • Airport information desk
  • Airline counter
  • Ground-handling desk
  • Airport security
  • Lost and found

depending on the problem.

What to Do If You Are Robbed at Istanbul Airport

If your phone, wallet, passport or luggage is stolen:

  1. Move to a safe area.
  2. Notify airport security/police.
  3. Call 112 if immediate police assistance is required.
  4. Block your bank cards.
  5. Contact your mobile operator.
  6. If your passport is missing, contact your embassy/consulate.
  7. Record your police report details.

Do not try to confront a suspected thief yourself.

Medical Services at Istanbul Airport

For a sudden serious medical problem, call:

112

Turkey’s 112 emergency medical service operates 24/7. Istanbul’s health authority specifically instructs people to call 112 for serious illness or injury, including loss of consciousness, serious bleeding, chest pain, breathing difficulty, poisoning and major accidents.

When calling, tell the operator:

  • You are at Istanbul Airport.
  • Terminal level.
  • Gate or nearby landmark.
  • Nature of the medical problem.
  • Number of people affected.

If you are already inside the terminal, notify airport staff at the same time.

Pharmacies and Medical Needs

The terminal includes pharmacy services, and the official Turkish Airlines terminal map allows passengers to locate pharmacies.

If you take prescription medicine, keep it in its original packaging and carry supporting documentation when appropriate.

For controlled or psychotropic medicines, don’t rely on general airport advice. Check Turkey’s current import rules before travelling.

This is especially relevant to passengers arriving from countries with different prescription-drug regulations.

Istanbul Airport Security Rules

Istanbul Airport follows Turkish civil aviation security rules.

The most common mistake is carrying prohibited cabin baggage.

Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority publishes detailed lists of items that may not be carried in cabin baggage and items that may be carried only in checked baggage.

Common Items You Should Not Put in Cabin Baggage

These include many:

  • Knives
  • Scissors
  • Blades
  • Corkscrews
  • Tools
  • Drills
  • Hammers
  • Sporting bats
  • Certain sharp objects
  • Weapons
  • Weapon replicas
  • Ammunition
  • Stun devices
  • Pepper spray
  • Certain chemical substances

The official prohibited-items list is considerably longer than this summary.

If you are unsure about an object, check before arriving at the airport.

Liquids at Istanbul Airport

Turkey applies liquid restrictions to domestic, international and transfer flights.

The general cabin rule is:

Each container: maximum 100 ml

All containers: one transparent, resealable 1-litre bag per passenger

The Civil Aviation Authority confirms that the rule applies to liquids, aerosols and gels.

This includes:

  • Water
  • Drinks
  • Perfume
  • Shampoo
  • Cream
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Contact-lens liquid
  • Liquid cosmetics
  • Honey
  • Jam
  • Yogurt
  • Other gel-like foods

Exceptions for Medicine and Baby Food

Necessary medicines can be exempt when properly documented and carried in original packaging.

Baby food can also qualify for an exception when the baby is travelling and the amount is appropriate for the journey.

Security officers may ask for documentation or additional verification.

Duty-Free Liquids During a Transit

If you buy perfume, alcohol or another liquid product at duty free, keep it in the sealed security bag with the receipt.

Do not open it before the final airport of your journey if another security screening or transfer is involved.

Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority specifically warns that duty-free liquid bags may be subject to confiscation during a later transfer if the sealed bag is opened.

Portable Batteries and Power Banks

Battery rules deserve extra attention in 2026.

Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority issued a new operational directive in April 2026 concerning portable batteries and lithium batteries, following ICAO changes.

Airline-specific rules can be stricter than the general airport rules.

Before your flight, check your airline’s current policy for:

  • Power banks
  • Spare lithium batteries
  • E-cigarette batteries
  • Large batteries
  • Smart luggage

Never assume that because an item is legal in your home country it automatically has the same carriage conditions on your flight.

Security Screening Tips at Istanbul Airport

Before reaching security:

  • Remove liquids that require separate screening.
  • Keep electronics accessible.
  • Remove prohibited sharp objects.
  • Empty pockets.
  • Follow instructions regarding coats and belts.
  • Be prepared to place laptops/tablets separately if requested.
  • Don’t joke about weapons or explosives.

Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority specifically instructs passengers to remove certain electronic items and metal objects for X-ray screening and warns against bringing weapons, explosives and imitations into airport security areas.

Istanbul Airport Airline Counters

IST hosts a very large number of airlines.

By the end of 2025, the number of scheduled passenger airlines operating at the airport had reached 116.

Turkish Airlines is by far the dominant carrier.

Other major airlines operating at IST include, among others:

  • Lufthansa
  • Emirates
  • Qatar Airways
  • Etihad Airways
  • British Airways
  • Air France
  • KLM
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Korean Air
  • ANA
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Royal Jordanian
  • Saudia
  • Oman Air
  • Gulf Air
  • Kuwait Airways
  • EgyptAir
  • Ethiopian Airlines
  • Air Astana
  • Azerbaijan Airlines
  • Air Serbia
  • LOT Polish Airlines
  • TAROM
  • Uzbekistan Airways
  • Turkmenistan Airlines
  • Iran Air
  • Iran Aseman Airlines
  • Iraqi Airways
  • Pegasus Airlines
  • IndiGo

Current airline directories list more than 100 carriers operating at IST, but schedules change.

Do All Airlines Have Permanent Counters at Istanbul Airport?

No.

This is a common misunderstanding.

An airline operating a flight from IST does not necessarily have a large permanent customer-service desk in the terminal.

Check-in counters are assigned according to the airline’s operating schedule.

Some large carriers have permanent or semi-permanent office facilities.

Others rely on:

  • Ground handlers
  • Airport information desks
  • Flight-specific check-in counters
  • Baggage service desks
  • Online customer service

For example, Turkish Airlines has extensive dedicated check-in infrastructure, while other international carriers may operate through designated counters or handling companies.

What If My Airline Does Not Have an Office at Istanbul Airport?

Go to the check-in counter assigned to your flight.

If you are already airside and have a problem with:

  • Boarding pass
  • Connection
  • Baggage
  • Flight change
  • Seat
  • Missed connection

look for the airline’s transfer desk or its handling agent.

Do not assume the airport information desk can change your airline ticket.

The airport operates the infrastructure.

The airline controls your ticket, booking and flight.

Istanbul Airport Flight Traffic

IST is now one of Europe’s busiest airports.

In 2025, Istanbul Airport handled:

84,406,050 passengers

and

549,316 aircraft movements.

That works out to roughly 1,505 aircraft movements per day when averaged across the year.

Eurocontrol data reported an average of approximately 1,491 daily flights in 2025, placing Istanbul Airport first in Europe for average daily flight activity for the fourth consecutive year.

The airport recorded a record 1,707 flights in one day on 18 July 2025.

Passenger traffic also reached a daily record of 282,835 passengers on 2 August 2025.

This level of traffic explains why the airport can feel extremely busy even when the terminal itself appears spacious.

How Many Destinations Does Istanbul Airport Serve?

The airport’s network extends to more than 330 destinations, with Turkish Airlines responsible for a very large portion of the network.

This geographic reach is one reason Istanbul Airport has become such an important transfer point between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

For travelers, the advantage is obvious: Istanbul can often be used as a connecting point instead of routing through Western European hubs.

Istanbul Airport and Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines moved its main hub from Atatürk Airport to Istanbul Airport in 2019.

Its enormous operation means that passengers using Turkish Airlines will encounter dedicated facilities throughout the terminal.

The airline’s check-in areas occupy several islands, while its lounge complex is among the airport’s largest passenger facilities.

If you are travelling on Turkish Airlines and have a long connection, check whether your ticket or Miles&Smiles status provides lounge access before paying for a separate iGA Lounge.

istanbul airport

Istanbul Airport Fast Track

Fast Track services are available for eligible airline passengers and can also be purchased as a premium airport service.

The exact availability depends on:

  • Airline
  • Ticket class
  • Frequent-flyer status
  • Airport service
  • Current eligibility

iGA offers Fast Track as one of its paid services.

If you have a short connection, Fast Track can be more useful than spending money on an expensive lounge.

Istanbul Airport Meet & Greet

iGA also offers a paid Meet & Greet service.

This can be useful for:

  • Elderly passengers
  • Families
  • First-time visitors
  • Passengers with complicated connections
  • Business travelers
  • VIP arrangements

The service can help passengers navigate a terminal that is considerably larger than most travelers expect.

Istanbul Airport Business and Meeting Facilities

The airport has facilities designed for business travelers, including meeting rooms and premium airport services.

Turkish Airlines’ international lounge includes meeting facilities, while iGA also offers meeting and business services through its premium-service portfolio.

If you are meeting a business contact at IST, agree on a specific terminal landmark rather than simply saying “let’s meet at arrivals.”

Is Istanbul Airport Open 24 Hours?

Yes.

DHMİ confirms that Istanbul Airport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year.

This does not mean that every shop, café or service counter is open continuously.

It means the airport itself remains operational.

Can You Sleep at Istanbul Airport Overnight?

Yes.

Your choices include:

Free rest seating

iGA Sleepod

Airport hotel

Lounge

For a few hours, the free rest areas may be sufficient.

For a long overnight connection, Sleepod or a hotel is much more comfortable.

Can You Shower at Istanbul Airport?

Yes, shower facilities are available through certain lounge and premium passenger services.

Turkish Airlines’ international lounge includes showers.

If you do not have lounge access, check the current iGA premium services before your trip for paid shower options.

Charging Phones at Istanbul Airport

Charging stations are available around the terminal and near many seating areas.

Still, don’t wait until your phone reaches 2%.

A phone is particularly important at IST because your:

  • Boarding pass
  • Flight information
  • Navigation
  • Transfer contact
  • Taxi details
  • Hotel reservation

may all be stored digitally.

Carry a charged power bank, while following your airline’s current battery rules.

What Should You Download Before Going to Istanbul Airport?

Before leaving your hotel, download:

  • Istanbul Airport app
  • Airline app
  • Offline Google Maps area
  • Hotel address
  • Boarding pass
  • Airport transfer details
  • Important phone numbers

If you are using a Turkish SIM, make sure mobile data is working before leaving your accommodation.

What Time Should You Arrive at Istanbul Airport?

There is no universal number because it depends on:

  • Domestic or international flight
  • Airline
  • Checked baggage
  • Passport
  • Travel season
  • Security queues
  • Airport traffic
  • Whether you already have a boarding pass

For an international flight, arriving several hours before departure is sensible.

Do not underestimate the time needed to reach a distant gate after completing check-in and security.

For domestic flights, the required time may be shorter, but you should still follow the airline’s recommended arrival time.

Istanbul Airport During Peak Travel Periods

The airport becomes particularly busy around:

  • Summer holidays
  • Eid periods
  • Christmas/New Year
  • Turkish public holidays
  • School holidays
  • Friday/Sunday travel peaks

During these periods, add extra time.

A 30-minute road delay can easily become a missed flight if you have planned your airport arrival too tightly.

Is Istanbul Airport Difficult for First-Time Visitors?

It can be.

The airport is well signposted, but its size is the main challenge.

The most common mistakes are:

  • Going to the wrong Istanbul airport
  • Going to the wrong terminal area
  • Underestimating walking distance
  • Arriving too late
  • Confusing international and domestic transfer procedures
  • Assuming baggage will be transferred on a separate ticket
  • Following the wrong transfer signs
  • Waiting too long before checking the gate
  • Leaving a transit area without understanding the immigration consequences

The solution is simple: check your airport code, flight number, terminal information and gate repeatedly.

Istanbul Airport vs Sabiha Gökçen Airport

The two airports serve different parts of Istanbul’s aviation network.

 Istanbul AirportSabiha Gökçen
CodeISTSAW
SideEuropeanAsian
Main hubTurkish AirlinesPegasus
Long-haul networkVery extensiveMore limited
MetroM11M4
Airport busHAVAİSTHAVABUS/IETT
Main roleInternational hubMajor Asian-side airport

If your ticket says IST, don’t go to Sabiha Gökçen.

If it says SAW, don’t go to Istanbul Airport.

This sounds obvious, but travelers make this mistake because both airports are often described simply as “Istanbul Airport” on third-party booking websites.

Istanbul Airport and Your Istanbul Holiday

For a traveler arriving in Istanbul for several days, the airport should be viewed as the beginning of the trip rather than simply a place to collect luggage.

Once you have completed immigration and reached your hotel, your next question is usually how to organize your time in the city.

If your itinerary includes the historic peninsula, our Grand Bazaar Istanbul: Kapalı Çarşı Complete Guide can help you plan your shopping day.

If you are interested in Ottoman palaces, link to Beylerbeyi Palace Istanbul.

For the city’s waterways, use Bosphorus Strait Istanbul: History, Geography, Bridges, Tunnels and the Best Way to Explore It.

For traditional spa experiences, see Historic and Famous Turkish Baths in Istanbul.

And for practical arrival information, connect this guide with Turkey SIM Card for Tourists: Best SIM Cards, Prices, eSIM, Coverage and Roaming in 2026 and Internet in Turkey for Tourists: 5G, Wi-Fi, Mobile Data, VPNs and Online Safety.

These guides work together because a visitor arriving at IST usually needs all of this information within the first few hours of a trip.

Why Airport Transfer and an Istanbul Tour Can Be Combined

A common mistake is treating airport transportation, hotel accommodation and sightseeing as completely separate purchases.

For a first visit, combining them can save time.

For example:

Istanbul Airport → private hotel transfer → hotel check-in → Istanbul daily tour

is much simpler than landing, negotiating transportation, searching for a hotel and then trying to work out sightseeing routes independently.

If you are arriving with family, elderly passengers or several suitcases, the difference becomes even more noticeable.

This is one reason our Istanbul Tour: Best Packages, Private Tours & Local Experiences is useful as the next step after planning your airport arrival.

For travelers continuing to other parts of Türkiye, Istanbul can also be the first stage of a wider Turkey itinerary.

Istanbul Airport Checklist Before Your Flight

Before leaving for IST, check:

  • Your ticket says IST, not SAW.
  • Your airline’s current check-in location.
  • Your terminal/gate information.
  • Passport validity.
  • Visa requirements.
  • Transit requirements.
  • Baggage allowance.
  • Liquid restrictions.
  • Power-bank rules.
  • Airline-specific restrictions.
  • Airport transfer arrangements.
  • M11/HAVAİST route if using public transport.
  • Flight status.
  • Weather and traffic.
  • Hotel address.
  • Your mobile data.
  • Your boarding pass.

Istanbul Airport Emergency Numbers

Keep these numbers saved:

112 — Police, ambulance, fire and other emergency services

Turkey now uses 112 as the single emergency number.

444 1 İGA / 444 1 442 — Istanbul Airport

The airport’s official contact information lists this as its main iGA number.

0850 888 33 34 — HAVAİST customer service

HAVAİST publishes this number for questions, suggestions and complaints.

0538 231 74 83 — HAVAİST lost property

Use this if an item was left on a HAVAİST vehicle.

For a medical emergency inside the terminal, calling 112 and clearly stating “Istanbul Airport” and your terminal/gate location is the safest option.

Istanbul Airport: The Most Important Things to Remember

Istanbul Airport is huge, but it becomes much easier to use once you understand its layout.

It has one main passenger terminal, with five major independent concourses and additional integrated gate areas. International and domestic passengers share the same broad terminal structure, but their security, passport and transfer procedures differ.

The airport’s official codes are:

IATA: IST

ICAO: LTFM

It opened in 2018 after approximately 42 months of major construction, covers a 76.5-million-square-metre airport site and contains a 1.4-million-square-metre main terminal.

In 2025, it handled more than 84.4 million passengers and nearly 550,000 aircraft movements, making it one of the busiest aviation hubs in Europe and the world.

For travelers, though, the impressive statistics are less important than a few practical rules:

Check whether your flight is IST or SAW.

Check your gate early.

Allow plenty of walking time.

Understand whether your connection requires Turkish immigration.

Do not assume baggage is transferred between separate tickets.

Use official airport transportation.

Keep your passport and boarding documents accessible.

Check current airline and Turkish aviation rules before travelling.

And if Istanbul is your destination rather than simply your connection point, don’t spend your first day trying to solve every logistical problem after landing.

Arrange your airport transfer, hotel and sightseeing plan in advance, then use your time in Istanbul for the places you actually came to see.
